IES is a one-day summit and community gathering of businesspeople of all backgrounds and expertise, getting together in one event to highlight the important aspects of running a successful business.

Three new immigrant business owners will compete and show the judges why they deserve $5,000 by presenting their personal story, business plan, and three year business projections.

Terry Branstad is the former U.S. Ambassador to China (2017-2020), and the longest serving governor in the history of the United States (1983-1999/2011-2017). He is a founding partner of the Branstad Churchill Group, a strategic consulting firm that provides advice, guidance and solutions to organizations, corporate leaders and investors seeking to navigate the complexities associated with conducting business in China and the United States.
Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate has dedicated his life to public service. Having served several terms as Secretary of State, mayor of Cedar Rapids, and state legislator, Secretary Pate has continually been guided by three core principles: service, participation, and integrity. For seven of the past eight years under Secretary Pate, Iowa has seen a record amount of new business filings. As a small business owner himself, serving and supporting Iowa’s small business landscape has been a top priority for Secretary Pate.
Bill Adamowski is a proven CEO/President/Catalyst of Entrepreneurial Ventures with a track record of growing revenue and driving successful exits. He currently serves as Executive Director of Entrepreneurship, innovation, and human centered design at Drake University’s College of Business and Public Administration (CBPA). He oversees the Drake Business Accelerator, New programs aim to bring world-class entrepreneurship education to underserved small business owners.
Kim Baer has over 33 years of experience helping her clients. She has worked for fortune 500 companies, small businesses and thousands of individuals and families. She has experience in personal injury, car and semi-truck accident cases, business law, medical malpractice and family law. Dan Arnell Belarmino is a Sr. Stakeholder Liaison Tax Specialist with the Internal Revenue Service. As a Sr. Stakeholder Liaison, he collaborates, informs, and communicates priority outreach messages to all taxpayer communities, including major employers, community associations and tax practitioner organizations to provide significant messages that impact taxpayers to ensure compliance with the tax laws.
Rory Bidinger is VP and Community Development Officer for Stearns Bank, focused on bringing the bank’s vision of economic empowerment to life through business and economic development, community investment, financial mastery, and innovative partnerships. Rory has over 24 years of marketing and community-building experience and is passionate about dismantling barriers to build strong collaboration through all sectors for inclusive growth.
Mark Bundy is a SCORE Mentor. His experience includes Business to Business Sales, Business to Consumer Sales. He’s created both strategic and tactical business plans. He has a passion for customers so every discussion starts with the customer: who it is, what they want, what makes the product / service useful to them, why would they do business with me?
Breann Bye has been with the City of Des Moines for nearly a year. She holds an educational background in Architecture/Planning. Prior to her current role, Breann served as the Director of the 6th Avenue Corridor, Des Moines’ ‘Main Street’ organization. She resides in the River Bend Neighborhood of Des Moines.
Igor Cavlovic is from Bosnia and Herzegovina. He is the AVP Commercial Banking Officer for Two Rivers Bank & Trust, and specializes in business lending, SBA lending, and business banking. He is also an experienced senior branch manager with a demonstrated history of working in the banking industry. He is skilled in loans, consumer lending, business lending, coaching, banking, and sales. He serves on the IES Planning Team.

Xavier Francis is the founder of Francis Law. His journey in immigration law started at 17 when he migrated from Jamaica to the U.S. Xavier’s career specialized in employment-based immigration, advising a wide array of clients including Fortune 500 companies, professional workers, startups, foreign investors, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations on U.S. immigration law and regulatory compliance. Xavier’s approach is rooted in his understanding that immigration is transformative—a belief that shapes the firm’s ethos to focus on quality service that significantly influences and shapes clients’ futures.
Christy Jones is a SCORE Mentor and owner of Clarity Business Coaching. Her journey in the dynamic collision repair industry, where she grew up, worked, purchased, and ultimately sold her family-owned business, has equipped her with a vast wealth of knowledge. This knowledge serves as a daily resource that she generously shares with business owners and employees, positioning her as a valuable ambassador for the community
Laura Kinnard is an educator and entrepreneurial advisor with a robust background in marketing and business management. She obtained her MBA and Internet Marketing from Florida Institute of Technology and Advertising Management degree from Drake University. In 2018, she founded Curated Growth, an organization dedicated to supporting entrepreneurs and fostering ecosystems. Her leadership extends to her role as the Director for the Runway Venture Studio, an affiliate of the Kauffman Foundation.
Albert Liu is the Director at U.S. Commercial Service in Des Moines assisting Iowa companies to enter international markets and expand exports globally. Albert has over 30 years of accomplished international sales, marketing and business development experience in both public and private sectors. His customer base and market reach have covered over 40 countries in Asia/Pacific, in EMEA, and in Latin America
Tar Macias is a Mexican immigrant who founded Hola America Media in 2000 to empower and inform the Latino community. Hola America is a fully bilingual news outlet providing local, regional, state, national, and international news with a focus on the contributions of Latinos in Illinois and Iowa. Tar has also partnered with LULAC Iowa to bring more Latinos to the Iowa Cacus and is involved in various community organizations in both states
Marlen Maddux is a nationally recognized, top producing mortgage loan officer and native of Honduras. In 1998, in the wake of Hurricane Mitch, and facing starvation, she left her two young daughters with relatives and embarked on a six-month journey to the United States. After running restaurants, Marlen obtained her real estate license and later her mortgage loan originator license. Along with the mortgage business, Marlen owns rental properties, a trucking business, and is a published author.
Amner Martinez is a native of Guatemala and has resided in the U.S. since 1990. Amner has been in staffing and management for more than 15 years and has been organizing and planning events for more than 12 years. Amner’s unique and diverse experiences inform his staffing approach and give Infinite Resources access to an unrivaled candidate pool. Amner combined all of his passions: recruiting, head hunting, leadership, team building & community involvement and created Infinite Resources.
Bopha Mom-Baccam, a wife, mom of four, realtor, gardener, and storyteller. As the youngest of eight in a Asian-American family, her life has been a beautiful blend of culture, family, and responsibility. For years, she poured myself into caring for her family, but somewhere along the way, she lost sight of who she was. Now, she’s on a journey of rediscovering herself—finding her passions, nurturing her growth, and learning to thrive.

Tricia Rivas is the Customer Relations Coordinator, America’s SBDC Iowa. She is also the owner of Trixies Salon & Spa in Des Moines and was named the Iowa SBA Women in Business Champion of the Year for 2023. She is an active member of several Des Moines metro area chambers of commerce and is involved with NAWBO Iowa and FemCity Des Moines. In 2016 Rivas also established Dream Catchers Foundation, a nonprofit that provides free salon and spa services to adults and children who are chronically or terminally ill and to their caregivers.
Yaneth Rodriguez procedente de Venezuela, con estudios profesionales y graduada en el 2002 en Contaduría y Administración Tributaria en la Universidad de Zulia – Venezuela. Amplia experiencia en el campo contable, trabajando para el Banco Central de Venezuela en el Departamento de Análisis Variables Macro Económicas. Actualmente, Ejerce su cargo de preparador de impuestos en Community CPA desde el 2021. Yaneth, es voluntaria en múltiples asociaciones promoviendo siempre el apoyo a nuestra comunidad y nuevos inmigrantes.
Ying Sa is the founder, CEO & Managing Partner, and Certified Public Accountant of Community CPA. Born in Beijing, China she immigrated to Canada before relocating to the US. Ying served six years as the Chief Financial Officer for the Iowa Manufacturing Extension Partnership at Iowa State University and five years as Vice President of Controllers for Wells Fargo Financial, Inc. in Des Moines, Iowa. She started Community CPA in 1998. Among her many distinctions and contributions, Ying served as a member on Taxpayer Advocacy Panel from 2019 to 2021. In 2019, she published Appointment with Ying @8am on starting a business, and in 2023 published her second book Appointment with Ying @10am on growing a business
Sneha Singh, PhD is passionate about holistic financial wellness for all. She has 15+ years’ experience in improving the quality of life for communities or color and marginalized sections of society. She has social- economic background and uses her knowledge and expertise to customize products and services businesses and families, educating on leveraging money management principles and tax strategies to enhance your current situation and save for the future.
Nick Tarpey has been an integral part of the City of Des Moines for the past three and a half years. He began his career in the Planning/Zoning department, where he focused on plan, permit, and zoning reviews. Nick holds a degree in City Planning and resides in the Columbus Park Neighborhood of Des Moines.
Jose Venales is the dynamic force behind The Iowa Credit and Lending Program. As its director, he skillfully develops and implements lending strategies that fuel Iowa’s entrepreneurial ecosystem. Jose’s expertise lies in maintaining a robust loan portfolio while ensuring these vital resources remain accessible to future business innovators. His work helps balance careful money management with growing Iowa’s economy, shaping the state’s business future. Over the years, Jose has helped hundreds of Iowa businesses get started successfully, making him an important figure in building up the state’s economy.
Micah Walker is a venture capitalist, entrepreneur, and business strategist focused on early-stage startup companies. He currently serves as an Investment Analyst at InnoVenture Iowa, a $40 million co-investment fund designed to support early-stage startups in the fields of bioscience, advanced manufacturing, and information technology. Micah is also the founder of Stratus IAC, a footwear company that uses algae-infused ethylene vinyl acetate to create comfortable, single-material footwear.
